London is one of the world’s best cities when it comes to pantomimes and theatre. Whether you’re looking for some family fun with a trip to see Mary Poppins, you’re heading to a West End show or soaking up some gloriously gritty theatre at the Old Vic, London has it all. Continue reading below to find some of the best theatres picks for the end of 2019.

Lungs, Old Vic Theatre

Here’s a show for anyone who’s been watching The Crown on Netflix. Lungs are debuting at the Old Vic Theatre and star Matt Smith and Claire Foy also of the hit series, The Crown. Lungs is very of its time and take on some of the key questions facing our society. We’re talking about environmentalism, climate change and the burden that pro-creating can have on our lives when the world is not ready for it. This gritty drama sees Smith and Foy at their best on a minimalist set where their performances are allowed to be taken for what they are rather than diluted by extravagant stage direction.

The Antipodes, National Theatre

American writer Annie Baker returns to the theatre with Antipodes – a drama that mixes realism, ritual, and fantasy to create a mouth-watering occultist ensemble. The Antipodes is a story about stories and features a group of people sitting around a table recounting their tales of existence and focuses on the very heart of humanity’s existentialism. The Antipodes enjoys the imperfect dialogue that creates a direct human attachment to the characters around the table and an increasingly immersive theatre experience for the audience. The Antipodes can be seen at the National Theatre from July 5.

Mary Poppins, Prince Edward Theatre

Now for something a little more light-hearted, for all the family to enjoy. 15 years since its West End debut, Mary Poppins is back in all its vibrant and cinematic glory. Fresh from a successful stint on Broadway, Charlie Stemp plays the loveable chimney sweep Bert and Mary Poppins herself is played by Zizi Strallen of Cats fame. Opening at the Prince Edward Theatre at the end of the year, this Mary Poppins show features all the favorites from the Disney classic, including ‘Spoonful of Sugar’ and ‘Let’s go fly a kite’. It’s all set to be an instant classic with everybody’s favorite nanny.

London is filled with amazing opportunities to see innovative shows and theatre performances from some of the silver screens leading names. The aforementioned shows are just some of the best shows hitting the streets of the West End and London’s theatres at the tail end of this year, but there are others to tantalize your theatrical taste buds. For somewhere to stay when you’re in the city, the Dorsett Hotel, City of London puts you right in the center of the action and provides a luxurious environment to relax after a busy show.

If you’re looking for more information about how to get tickets for each show, contact the theatre and you’ll be redirected to their ticketing website where you can purchase tickets for your show of choice.
